Installation Begins on Bulk’s HAVSIL Express Route between Europe and Nordics

New Route to Carry at least 30 Percent of Total International Traffic to Norway, Enabling National Strategy and Bringing the Nordics Closer.

Oslo, Norway – September 8, 2021Bulk Fiber Networks is the Nordics’ leading provider of ultra-scalable, highly connected, sustainable digital infrastructure and fiber networks, announced the start of installation for the HAVSIL submarine cable express route between Kristiansand, Norway, and Hanstholm, Denmark.

HAVSIL will be the shortest route connecting Norway to continental Europe, unlocking even more opportunities for digital infrastructure to leverage cost-competitive renewable energy in the Nordics.

In April, Bulk announced that all key supply contracts were executed, paving the way for the planned 10-day installation process which began on 5 September. Since the first announcement last year, the project continues its track record for success in end-to-end project execution. HAVSIL will be the first system that is fully financed, built and operated by Bulk Fiber Networks.

In June of 2020, Telia Carrier signed up as HAVSIL’s anchor customer and the Norwegian Communications Authority selected the HAVSIL system to serve as the new secure main fiber route for Norway’s international data traffic. When complete, this high-capacity express route will carry at least up to 30 percent of Norway’s international data traffic.

The HAVSIL cable spans across Skagerrak, from Esbjerg in Denmark to Oslo via Kristiansand in Norway, with 192 fibers fully buried on the seabed for protection and reliability. The HAVSIL terrestrial portion will proceed down along the West Coast of Denmark, bypassing the longer and more congested city routes. Bulk offers flexible IRU or long-term lease agreements for single or multiple Dark Fiber pairs on the submarine cable.

- This new express fiber route has the capacity needed to further enable Norway’s strategy as a destination nation for data centers and digital infrastructure,” says Merete Caubet, Vice President, Fiber Networks of Bulk Infrastructure. “HAVSIL brings both diverse redundant connectivity between Continental Europe and the Nordics, as well as being the only cable system in the region with modern neutral data centers at both end points.”

This direct-to-data-center route further reduces cost and complexity by avoiding the more common cable landing stations and getting from there to the data center. The HAVSIL fiber system will be fully completed and ready for service by December this year.
