Esbjerg Municipality chooses Bulk Data Centers as part of their hybrid IT strategy.

Esbjerg, September 12, 2022 - Bulk Data Centers – one of the leading providers of co-location services in the Nordic region – can today announce that Esbjerg Municipality has chosen to enter into a multi-year agreement with Bulk Data Centers for secure, sustainable and flexible Colocation of the municipality's IT environment.

Esbjerg is a digital hub and the Municipality has an ambitious digitalization strategy. It is an important milestone that has been reached by consolidating the Municipality's IT environment with Bulk Data Centers in Esbjerg. Until now, the Municipality had a decentralized strategy with their server park hosted at selected locations, but this was no longer an option in relation to the growing amount of data with increasing CO₂ emissions as well as the need for increased connectivity and physical flexibility.

Sustainability and a green profile have weighed heavily in the decision-making process and the choice of Bulk Data Centers as a vendor. The location of the data center close to the supply of renewable energy from the offshore wind farms in Esbjerg means that no valuable energy is lost from production to consumption. For Esbjerg Municipality in isolation, the switch to Bulk Data Centers means a reduction in CO₂ emissions from fewer locations and the energy-optimizing initiatives at Bulk Data Centers.

Esbjerg municipality setting the trend

"The amount of data is growing rapidly these years, so it is incredibly important that we take the lead in the municipality and think smarter and gather the IT environment in one place with energy-optimized solutions. Bulk Data Centers has, and we have seen the true value of co-location when we visited the site, which is in Esbjerg. The data centre is of course highly secured physically and operationally there are the necessary back-up installations for maximum uptime, but for the municipality it is also of great importance that square meters can be saved elsewhere, and that there is a focus on interconnectivity with the increased use of Cloud-Computing," says Esben Foverskov, Head of IT in Esbjerg Municipality.

For Esbjerg Municipality, Cloud computing is an effective way to optimize the IT infrastructure with an on-demand availability, which also benefits the citizens, but not everything can be stored or processed in the "Cloud" due to either regulatory requirements or financial considerations. It has been crucial for Esbjerg Municipality that Bulk Data Centers has been able to offer a closed and secure circuit to e.g., MS365 with DE-CIX (Internet Exchange Point and interconnection platform). In addition, Esbjerg Municipality will in future be able to connect directly to e.g. AWS, Google Cloud, Oracle, SAP or one of the more than 50 other Cloud providers available via DE-CIX via the same secure network port.

The agreement between Esbjerg Municipality and Bulk Data Centers will also ensure the best possible response times between the Municipality and its citizens, as Bulk Data Centers has an agreement with all the major internet providers, which removes unnecessary delays in relation to routing via for instance Copenhagen.

The local and sustainable choice

"We are very pleased that Esbjerg Municipality has chosen Bulk Data Centers and thereby also our green co-location solution. We are a Norwegian company, which over the past 3 years has become an integrated part of Esbjerg's international ecosystem, which makes use of local Danish labor. It is planned that the Data Center in Kjersing will connect to the local district heating in 2023, which means that the users of Esbjerg Municipality's services will ultimately help supply sustainable heat to the nearby households. We have no doubt that the upcoming collaboration with Esbjerg Municipality will lead to more innovative ideas for the benefit of the local environment and the climate. Specifically, solar energy and biodiversity will be considered in the upcoming expansions of the data center," says Kristian Kofoed-Solheim, Sales Director at Bulk Data Centers.
